Snopes.com did something over the weekend that was rather surprising – it told the truth.
For years – despite incontrovertibly video evidence to the contrary – critics of former President Donald Trump have claimed he said neo-Nazis and KKK types were “very fine people” at an event in Charlottesville, VA.
It’s been false since the first time it was claimed and it’s false today. It was also something then-former Vice President Joe Biden said made him run for president in the first place.
Snopes.com was once a rather trustable site but has gone the way of the world in the past few years, so for it to (finally – it happened seven years ago ) take fresh look and say uh, nope, didn’t happen is actually quite amazing.
Now don’t expect to see this referenced in much, if any, of the big media outlets. Fox News is running it because, well, of course, but the other outlets that regularly quote Snopes as a true and real fact checking service will stay mum.
So credit – if belated – where credit is due. Here’s the link to the story.
I continue to laugh at Snopes, which goes to great pains to pounce on every Babylon Bee satire post with fact checks but it took them 7 very long years to debunk the “very fine people” hoax. Politifact, Snopes, and the Washington Post (Glenn Kessler) have all torpedoed their integrity and credibility.
